The Allington and Horton stretch of the K&A is a curvaceous and lock free zone running for about 5 miles which can be completed in about an hour. These are the Marlborough Downs and form the highest part of Wiltshire. This is part of the Long Pound 15 miles with only the odd swing bridge so take your time and enjoy the relaxing ride.
The landscape which is lovely and peaceful is punctuated by some remote villages but pretty much bereft of shops and pubs along the canal itself. So make sure you stock up the day before! The villages you will pass are set back a little way and include All Cannings, Allington, Horton and Bishops Cannings. For Pubs you will need to trek inland a bit to the Kings Arms at All Cannings or the Bridge Inn at Horton Bridge (134.) There is also a good village shop in All Cannings geared for locals and boaters.
There is a steep hill rising 530ft and giving some amazing views known as The Knoll on the north side of the canal more or less in line with Allington Bridge (130.)
