Pewsey on the K&A
Pewsey is a 4 mile stretch onwards from Savernake and crofton, starting at entry to Wootton Rivers. There are just 2 locks so allow about 2 hours for this section.

Pewsey is situated in wilshire and often referred to as the Vale of Pewsey, it was originally owned with surrounding lands by King Alfred and hence the statue in the town/ village. Pewsey Wharf is about 4 miles again from Crofton and Savernake but it is largely lockless apart from the pair at Wootton River (51 and 52) so a very easy time can be enjoyed along this stretch of the canal. You should allow about 2 hours. Pewsey Wharf is about 3/4′s of a mile from Pewsey itself, so consider a reasonable walk or try your luck with bus or taxi but you can also enjoy some relaxation time Boatmans Rest, The Waterfront or a little further along the French Horn.

n 1937 the Pewsey White Horse was re-cut on the steep slope of Pewsey Hill replacing an earlier version from 1785.

The Pewsey Carnival was started in 1891 and is still flourishing culminating in a torch-lit procession  the festival takes place between mid and late September. There is also the local Heritage Centre and a few long-standing buildings. Before you reach Pewsey at Wootton Lock you will have reached the summit of the K&A some 450 ft above sea level.

You can stock-up supplies as long as you can carry them back or get a lift shops and supermarket in Pewsey itself.

This stretch through largely rural area gives you a flavour of what life was like across much of the K&A when it originally opened.
